Your first consultation will include a detailed discussion of your concerns, and an examination and ultrasound. This allows your gynaecologist to give you individualised advice as to the best options to manage your heavy periods.
Treatment options which may be discussed include:
Hormonal Preparations
Many women will benefit from hormonal medications which can be delivered in a variety of ways; as tablets, patches or as an implant.
Common forms of hormonal treatments are “The Pill”, Provera or PrimolutN (progestagens), Implanon, Depo Provera, or the Mirena IUCD
Mirena IUCD releases small amounts of progesterone into the uterine lining to control periods. It also acts as a contraceptive. Mirena can be inserted with or without an anaesthetic, depending on your circumstances, and can work for up to five years. We find that 4 out of 5 women are happy with the Mirena IUCD.
Surgical Options for heavy periods
Surgical options do not involve hormones, and are often permanent with no ongoing treatment required. Obviously an operation is involved, and some options permanently interfere with fertility.
Endometrial resection removes the part of the lining of the uterus which produces your period each month. This is a day case procedure, and in our experience 90% of women are happy with the results of this treatment. It is not suitable for women wishing to maintain fertility.
